Though Ivlis is the Devil of his world, he didn’t naturally come into this position. A long time ago, his god Siralos created suns in the overworld. However, he also wanted people to serve him later on, so he created from the flame and light of the sun, Ivlis and his “sister”, Igls Unth.
Ivlis, alongside Igls, were shown many things by Siralos as they traveled around the world, and the most important thing that he taught them was that the sun was necessary for life to thrive here. As they were still young at the time and did not know much aside from their god’s words, they listened and immediately became loyal to him.
Ivlis’s childhood was filled with happiness, though as he grew older, he started to wonder about Siralos’s actions, why life can’t thrive without the sun, and how they didn’t have any freedom from it. Although Igls scolded him and said that their god did not make any mistakes and shouldn’t be doubted, Ivlis kept on wondering until he couldn’t take it anymore, and feeling sorry about the way life was, he went to question Siralos about it.
Unfortunately, Siralos didn’t take well to a mere question, and told him that he was disappointed in Ivlis and that he should not have been created since Ivlis had doubted him, which was considered a sin to Siralos. Thus, Ivlis had his wings torn off and was cast down into the hellfire by his own god.
Not much is known what happened afterwards, though presumably, he took up the position of being the Devil of the Flame world, and ended up having a son and daughter made from fire, Vendetto and Poemi. Events between him and Vendetto are unknown as well and whatever led up to it, it ended up being so bad that it was enough to make his son run away from home.
Though it’s not known who tipped him off about the Gray Garden world, Ivlis hatched a plan to invade them. Though he couldn't enter the Gray Garden properly, he sent out a few of his scouts that were able to with the order to destroy the diamonds that upheld the barrier. Not without a bit of a slip-up of course, as Wodahs, an angel who was investigating the strange things that were happening in the Gray Garden, stumbled upon one of the holes connecting his world to the Flame world, and was immediately disposed of by Ivlis before he could relay the info to his god.
Once that was done, he was able to come through. Though Etihw tried to stop him at the beach, he quickly disposed of her and trapped her in his world. He then went after Kcalb and fought him for quite a while (even tearing his arm off at one point offscreen) before the four main girls came. As valiantly as they fought against him, they were no match, and he easily tossed them aside. Even when Yosafire managed to stand up and take a stand, Ivlis only responded by toying with her (to the point where he momentarily groped her body). However, as he turned his back on Kcalb, the other Devil was able to take him by surprise and stole a chunk of his powers to weaken him enough where the girls were able to overtake him.
Luckily, his subordinates returned just in time to defend him, and they would have almost succeeded, had it not been for Etihw escaping her prison. Not wanting for the God to make good on her threat, Ivlis retreated, but not before knocking Kcalb off a cliff.
In coming back home, he and his group come across Reficul, where she mercilessly beat them up. Post-TGG, he's now being mercilessly bullied by Reficul and another Devil, Satanick.
Personality: “I’m a Devil. I’m EVIL.”
Those are the words Ivlis upholds and claims to be, and for the most part, it seems like he lives up to it. As he rules over the Flame World with an iron fist, he is serious in every way, and uses fear as a means to command respect from his subordinates. Not even his own family is an exception, as his daughter Poemi will sometimes refer to him as "Lord Ivlis". Yet, despite his demeanor, he hardly ever gets mad if someone makes a minor mistake. Besides, why bother yelling for the little things? He knows that's only going to drive people away, so he doesn't berate them for it. Granted, it doesn't mean he won't think they're idiotic, but he'll just brush it off and proceed to move on as if it were nothing.
Just as well, he tends to be pretty confident. Throughout TGG and in a few artworks showcasing just him, he seems pretty assured, to the point where he gets cocky. Case in point- where he tries to take Kcalb on because he thinks that living in a peaceful world has made Kcalb soft and weak. He doesn't think- he knows that whatever plan he's got/goals he's set his sights on, he's sure as hell knows he'll reach it, and if anything gets in his way, he'll definitely crush them. He's a Devil, don't you know? Nobody stands a chance against a powerful being like him!
Despite that, he's pretty much an airhead. For all his grandeur, if he tends to focus too much on one task, he'll forget to cover all his bases and end up failing miserably (i.e. in TGG, he didn't account for Reficul passing by and freeing the 4 main girls, which then snowballed into him losing part of his powers near the end). It's not that he isn't smart- he just gets overconfident when he thinks he's about to succeed and doesn't apply his intelligence properly when it's needed.
And when that happens? He loses his cool. Just like fire, his temper flares up if his plans go awry or when he's being insulted. He lashes out both physically and/or verbally, and he won't stop unless either someone tries or is powerful enough to stop him or he gets his way. Usually the former though because it's pretty much bad news if he ever got his way. And even if he loses, he'll still try to find a way to get back at someone- like pushing someone who's already near-death over a cliff. It's petty, but hey, whatever works and whatever gains him a win, no matter how small.
Another thing is that he can be cowardly against someone that has more power over him. Much as he hates to admit it, Ivlis can't do anything if he knows that he doesn't stand a chance, like when Etihw broke free and he ended up retreating in fear of what the God might have done if he had continued on. It's made worse post-TGG, when he's the target of bullying by Reficul and Satanick, and he's helpless to stop them, since he's lost part of his powers. Suffice to say, those experiences have made him somewhat meek.
For all his faults, there's another side to Ivlis that's rarely ever seen. In an extra scene of the Curse of the Sun, he's shown holding a pin from the overworld in his hand as he looks over it. Though it doesn't show the expression he's making, it's implied that for all his resentment against Siralos, there is still some part of him that yearns to return to his old home and to no longer be considered as a failure in the Sun God's eyes. And though it's not really shown properly in TGG, some conversations with Poemi imply that although he's kind of a bad dad, he at least treats her well enough to some degree that she still loves him. Aside from her, Emalf and Rieta are the only people he's close to, and it's why they were willing (or well, mostly willing in Emalf's case) to aid in the invasion, as they've managed to gain some form of trust with him. It's pretty hard to get that, so it'd take a lot of work to get him to trust someone.
All in all, Ivlis is a guy who's been warped by his experiences, but also has a side that he shows only to others that are worthy of his trust. That is, if they can dig get past his issues and are willing to dig through 60 feet of dirt to find that hidden part of him.
Inventory:
-His clothes
-His scarf-wings
-The pin from the overworld that he's kept with him for so long.
Abilities: Since Ivlis is the ruler of Flame World, he has immense power and control over fire. Even if some of his power has been taken away, he'll still manage to hold his own pretty well, and is able to shoot more advanced levels of Magic Flame, as well as summon a spear made of fire. And as he's a Devil, he has higher endurance, strength, and agility. Plus, he can also fly, but only if he has signature scarf-wings.
Strengths and Weaknesses:
+Confident: As stated earlier, he's seems assured enough that he'll get his way and whatever he does will work.
+Assertive: He doesn't back down easily, and will definitely put his foot down on any unnecessary demands from spirits and workers alike, unless it's absolutely mandatory.
+Strong: Being a Devil, even one with some of his powers taken away, makes him more durable and has strength and abilities beyond a normal human's and low-magic figures, so it'd be pretty hard to defeat him.
-Stubborn: While he doesn't back down early on, it also means that he's not willing to budge on whatever decision he makes, even if it would lead to it blowing up in his face.
-Hot-Tempered: Also stated earlier, he tends to blow up when things don't go his way, and with how he can lash out, it'd turn away a lot of people.
-Prideful: He can be quite arrogant, and would probably look down on anyone he'd perceive as weak, which would also probably drive away anybody.
